We spent two years stuck on ‘maybe next year’. Here is what actually happened when we finally took the plunge, set up a 12ft frame pool in a garden full of lumps and bumps, and let two water-loving teens loose on it for a full summer.

We had been circling a proper garden pool for a couple of years and always talked ourselves back to ‘maybe next year’. What tipped us over was watching two sets of close family friends with similar pools. Their kids were happy for hours on warm days, all summer long, and both families swore by them. One leaves theirs up all year round with a single annual drain, clean and refill. The other does a full setup in May and takes it down in October. We didn’t know which camp we would land in when we bought ours, and honestly, we still don’t. We’ll see how we feel when autumn arrives. What You Actually Get in the Box
One of the genuine pleasures of this pool is that it is a complete set. You are not buying a pool and then discovering you need to source half the kit separately before you can use it. Everything you need to get water in and kids splashing around like idiots comes in the one box.
• The framed pool itself, with the Tri-Tech 3-ply liner. This is a reinforced material, a polyester mesh core sandwiched between two layers of high-gauge PVC, which is what gives the wall its strength and puncture resistance.
• The steel frame, which uses Bestway’s Seal and Lock connector system. The custom T-connectors stop metal sitting directly against metal, which is what prevents the rust and corrosion that kills cheaper frames.
• A safety ladder, so the kids can get in and out without clambering over the wall. A real tick in the ‘complete set’ box (this is where the rachet set comes in handy.
• A 530-gallon filter pump with hoses and a filter cartridge, which keeps the water circulating and clean.
• A built-in flow-control drain valve, and a repair patch for peace of mind.
A good ratchet set is the only tools required for the build itself. What the box does not mention, and what most people learn the hard way, is everything that happens before you are allowed to enjoy any of it. That is where the rest of this review comes in.

Setup: How Long It Really Takes
From sealed box to a fully built, empty pool with the ladder assembled, we were at roughly an hour and a half. That is a realistic figure for two people working steadily, and it includes putting the steps together (the hardest part!). The frame genuinely does go together without tools, and the Seal and Lock connectors are satisfying once you get the rhythm of them.
But an hour and a half is the build. It is not the moment anyone gets wet. Two things stand between the finished frame and a swim, and both take longer than you expect: getting the ground level, and filling it.
The One Job You Absolutely Cannot Skip: Levelling
This is the single most important thing in the entire review, so we are putting it in its own section. On a pool this size, the ground must be level before you fill it. This is not a nice-to-have. Water is heavy, and water finds its own level whether you have helped it or not.
Our garden is full of lumps and bumps, nowhere near flat. In fact this was one of the main reasons we hesitated for as long as we did, fully aware of the need to undertake actual ground work before we could go ahead and get the kids the pool they had been nagging for every summer. The fact is, if you fill a big frame pool on a slope (no matter how small), the water effectively wants to run downhill, which loads enormous, uneven pressure onto the low side of the pool’s structural supports. At best the pool sits wrong and looks it. At worst you are looking at a wall failure, and although watching the kids get catapulted across the garden on a tidal wave might sound funny, it really isn't something we'd want to see. It genuinely feels like a ticking time bomb if you get it wrong, and it is completely avoidable.
How we levelled bumpy ground without digging We used a simple length of 1x2 timber, long enough to span four of the side sections at a time, with a long spirit level laid across the top. That let us work around the circle one section at a time, keeping the same intervals the whole way round. Where a leg sat low, we packed under it with offcuts of leftover decking board, cut small but wide enough to spread the weight of the leg, and tapped them into place with a mallet. How many offcuts each leg needed depended on the dip. Any spare wood does the job. It is not the textbook solution, but for a first summer where budget or time is tight, it works perfectly well. |
If we do take the pool down over winter, we would almost certainly use that window to level the ground properly and finish it off ready for next summer, so we are not repeating the packing exercise every year. But as a way to get safely up and running this season, the timber-and-offcuts method has held up without complaint. It is worth the extra hour. Do it once, do it right, and the rest of the summer is just swimming.
Filling It: Manage the Kids’ Expectations
Once the frame is level, you can fill. And filling takes a long time. At the 1m height, this pool holds around 9,150 litres of water when filled to the recommended 90 percent, and a garden hose moves that much water slowly. Depending on what time of day you start, getting in the same day is often not realistic.
A small piece of hard-won parenting advice Do not promise the kiddos they are getting in today unless you started filling first thing. A half-full pool and two disappointed children is an avoidable afternoon. Start the fill early, or set expectations for tomorrow from the outset. Or, if they really really can’t wait, explain to them they can get in, but it will only be half full until tomorrow. |
Setting Up the Filter Pump
The filter pump is the one piece of the kit that looks more technical than it is. Two hoses connect the pump to the two valve openings on the pool wall, the filter cartridge sits inside the pump housing, and the whole unit sits on firm, level ground below the waterline, close enough to the pool that the hoses are not under strain. Ours went together in about ten minutes without drama.
Two small things worth knowing. Push the hose clips on properly before you fill, because retro-fitting them against water pressure is a wet job. And once the pool is full, let the pump run for a good stretch on day one so the water gets a full first pass through the cartridge before anyone swims. From then on, a couple of hours a day is the routine, which we cover next.
Keeping It Clean: Pool Hygiene for Beginners
If you have only ever owned a paddling pool you tip out each evening, this is the genuinely new part, and it is less daunting than it sounds once you have a routine. A pool this size holds its water, so you have to keep that water safe to swim in.
Here is what we actually use, day to day:
• Test strips. Litmus-style pool testing strips tell you where your water is at. A few seconds, and you know whether anything needs correcting before the kids get in.
• Chlorine tablets in a floater. Most days, this is all it takes. You drop a tablet into a floating dispenser, let it bob around, and it dissolves slowly into the water over time. Simple and largely hands-off.
• A spa or pool starter kit. This holds the chemicals you need to correct things like acidity when the strips tell you the balance has drifted. You will not need it every day, but you will be glad of it when you do.
• The filter pump, run daily. For a pool this size the pump needs a minimum of a couple of hours a day. Running it circulates the chlorine and keeps the whole thing hygienic. This is the part it is easiest to forget and most important not to.
None of this is hard. It is a five-minute habit rather than a chore, but it is an ongoing commitment, and it is the honest difference between a paddling pool and a proper pool. Worth knowing before you buy rather than discovering in week two.

Warming It Up: The Heater Is Worth It, But Be Patient
Straight out of the hose, the water is genuinely icy. We added the Bestway pool heater, and it got the water to a really comfortable bathing temperature, but the honest caveat is the same one that runs through this whole review: it takes time. Going from freezing-cold mains water to pleasant swimming temperature took a few days in reality, not an afternoon. Once it is there, it holds, and the heater earns its place for a British summer where the air temperature cannot always be relied upon. Just don’t expect to flick it on and swim in warm water by teatime.
The Honest Drawback: The Cover
Without a doubt, the honest drawback for this pool, is the cover that is supposed to fit it.
Two problems. First, because the pool is large, which is a total bonus for a growing family with no trouble fitting everyone in, the cover is a definite two-person job at the end of the day. Try to fit it solo and you end up dragging it back into the water as fast as you pull it across. Second, the fixing itself leaves a lot to be desired. It is a simple drawstring, and the moment you get any wind at all, the drawstring does very little to actually anchor the cover down. It also has small holes in the centre, presumably to allow rain water to drain through rather than collect, but in fact all it ends up doing is letting small bits of grit and debris leak into the pool rather than keeping it out as a cover should.
The Cover We Use Now
However, if like us, you choose to admit defeat on the Bestway pool cover and opt for a different solution, we can fully recommend the Uirway 12ft circular cover instead. This is the cover that now proudly sits atop our pool and does a stand-up job. True, it’s still a two-person job to fit, but we think that is more to do with the size of the pool than the cover itself. Crucially however, this one stays in place and withstands both wind and rain, essential for a British summer. It has a proper strap and clip system around the edge which feels altogether far more robust than the Bestway’s drawstring offering and in addition, has anchor points all around the edge that you can actually peg into the ground if you are expecting high winds, with pegs included. All in all, a much better cover option than our first purchase. This does not however take anything away from the actual pool itself, which is brilliant.
What Happens in Autumn? The Apple Tree Question
This is the decision still ahead of us, and it is worth raising because it applies to anyone siting a pool under or near trees. We have big apple trees in the garden, and one of them very slightly overhangs the pool where we have set it, since space left us no other option. As things stand, that leaves us with two routes once summer fades.
We either take the pool down for winter, the May-to-October approach one of our friends swears by, or we leave it up year-round with an annual drain and clean like our other friends do. The complication is that the cover, as we have just covered (pun intended), is not really up to standing alone against a winter of falling apples and leaves. Leave it up unprotected under that branch and we could be the proud owners of a giant apple-bobbing barrel come Halloween. We will make the call when we get into the autumn and see how we are feeling. If we do take it down, (and something tells us this is the most likely option) that is also our chance to level the ground properly for next year. Ultimately, we have already come to the conclusion that despite purchasing the cover intended to match with this particular pool, we need a more durable solution, which we are currently researching as we write this. We will report back.
How Long Do Bestway Pools Last?
We cannot answer this from our own pool yet, this is our first summer with it, so here is the honest version instead. The two families whose pools convinced us to buy are both several summers in on similar Bestway frame pools, one leaving it up year-round with an annual drain and clean, the other doing a full spring setup and autumn takedown. Neither has needed to replace anything structural.
What seems to decide it is not the pool, it is the owner. Level ground protects the frame and liner from the uneven loading that causes most failures. Balanced water protects the liner from chemical damage. A proper cover, or a winter takedown, protects everything from debris and frost. Get those three right and several seasons is a realistic expectation. Skip the levelling or let the water go, and one rough season is entirely possible. Check the warranty terms on the current listing before you buy, and keep your receipt.
Is It Worth It for a Growing Family?
With two growing girls in the house and a whole summer holiday stretched out in front of us, there is no doubt this has been a solid investment. If you have water babies at home, stepping up from the standard paddling pool as they get older is a considered purchase, not just financially but in terms of the upkeep we have been honest about throughout. It is not a buy-it-and-forget-it product.
But having taken the plunge this year, (sorry, we had to), it is absolutely doable and far less scary than it first appears. The girls have been in it most days since it arrived, even when the weather takes the dips a British summer is famous for. One thing is certain: they are not going to be bored on their summer break. For a family that will genuinely use it, year after year, it pays for itself in happy afternoons alone.
