There is one question that comes up more than almost any other when people find out we have been camping with our family for over seven years: how do you actually sleep properly in a tent?

The honest answer used to be that we didn't. Not always.

Building a best family camping sleep setup turned out to be a longer project than we expected. We used to sleep in our VW T6 campervan when the kids were smaller, but to be honest, their time in the pop-top had a bit of a shelf life. What was all rosy in the beginning soon soured on longer trips in the European heat as they grew and were both wrestling each other to claim a sliver's width of more space. I would say from then on, nearly every trip we have done we have been refining and tweaking our sleep setup over the years and finally feel like we may have cracked it. However, roll back the clock and when we first started sleeping in our Vango Galli 3 drive-away awning rather than the van, there were nights on most trips where someone woke up with a deflated mattress, someone else had rolled onto the cold floor in the middle of the night, and the whole family shuffled bleary-eyed out of the tent in the morning feeling more tired than when they went in. The camping sleep system — the bit that should be the easiest part of the whole experience — was the bit that let us down most often, and frankly, I'm one of those people who is genuinely rubbish without sleep. What should be a relaxing, fun-filled family time to reconnect and make memories can fast take a dark turn when my sleep is compromised. Changes had to be made, and they would continue to be made until we got it right.

We essentially rebuilt our family camping sleep setup from scratch. What we use now is genuinely the best night's sleep we have ever had outdoors. It's not an overstretch to say it is comfortably better than a lot of hotel beds we have stayed in over the years. This post covers exactly what we use, why we chose each product, who each option suits, and the honest verdict after real-world testing across multiple trips.

Whether you are camping with young children who need their own space, looking for a solution that works for mixed ages and mobility needs, or just done with waking up on the floor with a flat airbed at 3am — this is the family camping sleep system guide we wish had existed when we started out.

Why Your Camping Sleep Setup Matters More Than You Think

Most camping advice focuses on the tent, the cooking gear, the storage solutions. All incredibly valid advice but sleep almost always comes last. In short, this is a mistake. Why would you spend money on a great tent and then spend every night uncomfortable inside it? Why would you risk the enjoyment factor of the whole trip?

A bad night's sleep on a camping trip does not just make you tired. It changes the energy of the whole day. Kids are fractious, adults are grumpy, the weather that felt manageable yesterday now feels miserable. Get the sleep right and everything else becomes more enjoyable. We have had wet weeks in Wales where the family was genuinely happy because everyone slept well. We have had perfect weather trips in Europe that felt hard because we didn't get the sleep setup right from the start.

The other thing worth saying early is that there is no single right answer for every family. The products we review here cover three genuinely different approaches — sleeping on the ground at low height with exceptional comfort, sleeping at a raised height that feels closer to a proper bed, and sleeping in our van in our pop-top or rock 'n' roll bed. All are valid. The right choice depends on your priorities, the ages and mobility of the people in your group, and the size of your tent, awning, or van. We will be clear throughout about who each option actually suits.

Our Current Setup — The Full Picture

We camp as a family of four - two adults and two girls - in our Vango Galli 3 drive-away awning, which has a large single sleep compartment that replaced our previous two-bedroom awning configuration. The change to the single compartment transformed the whole camping experience beyond just sleep. With everyone in the same space we can have proper family time in the evenings, the kids can drift off while we all watch a film together when the weather turns, and there is something genuinely lovely about everyone being together rather than divided into separate sleeping rooms. Now we have both bedroom compartment options, it's great to have maximum versatility as the kids grow and needs change.

Into the single large bedroom unit, we run two 16cm Outwell DreamBoat mats for the adults and two 15cm Outwell DreamHaven mats for the girls - all placed side by side to create a continuous sleeping surface across the full width of the awning floor. On longer trips or when we want a height option, the Airefina inflatable king-size mattress comes out instead, topped with Duvalay travel memory foam toppers. And for the girls, when space is the priority over anything else, the Hi-Gear Duo Bunk Bed is a genuine game-changer that we still use regularly both on trips and at home. So let's get into it.

The Outwell DreamBoat — The Best Camping Sleeping Mat We Have Ever Used

Who it's for: Adults who want the most comfortable sleeping mat on the market and are happy sleeping lower to the ground.

Outwell DreamBoat camping sleeping mat on tent floor

The Outwell DreamBoat is one of the most talked-about premium self-inflating mats in family camping circles right now, and having used ours across multiple seasons and trips we can say the reputation is entirely justified.

The mat uses what Outwell call their Advanced Foam Construction — horizontal cut-out zones within the foam core that create a genuinely different feel to any other mat we have used. Rather than the flat, firm surface of a traditional self-inflating mat, the DreamBoat gives you something that genuinely feels spongy and supportive in the way a memory foam mattress does. It responds to the contours of your spine. It gives under your hips and shoulders while supporting the rest of your body. It is — and we do not use this description lightly — genuinely comfortable.

We inflate ours with the Outdoor Master Shark 2S pump and from fully compressed to sleeping-ready takes roughly two to three minutes. The AFC (Advanced Flow Control) valve is one of the best valves on a camping mat — deflation is equally fast and the seal is excellent, meaning you are not losing pressure overnight the way cheaper mats do.

The honest caveat is the height. At 16cm inflated, the DreamBoat keeps you genuinely low to the ground. When you are lying on it this feels like a complete non-issue — the comfort level means you do not feel like you are on the floor in any meaningful sense. It's more of a perception thing when you are down there. Unless you are a futon fan, most people sleep at a more elevated height and yeah, it's a minor but noticeable adjustment. Getting up in the morning, particularly after a long drive or a day of hiking, does require lowering and raising yourself from a ground-level position. If that is a physical challenge for anyone in your group, this is not the right option — but we will come to the alternative that addresses this directly.

The DreamBoat Double measures 210 x 140 x 16cm with a packed size of 67 x 28cm. The DreamBoat Single measures 200 x 77 x 16cm at a packed size of 78 x 22cm. Both are made from 50D stretch polyester using 100% recycled filling — which we love (who doesn't love a brilliant product that is also eco-friendly!). The double weighs 6kg; the single 3.8kg.

The Outwell DreamHaven: The Slightly Smaller Sibling for Younger Campers

Who it's for: Adults who want the most comfortable sleeping mat on the market and are happy sleeping lower to the ground.

Outwell DreamHaven camping sleeping mat on tent floor

The Outwell DreamHaven is the DreamBoat's sibling rather than its competitor, same foam construction, same valve system, same fundamental comfort philosophy, but in a slightly narrower format that makes it ideal for children or for anyone working with a tighter footprint in their sleeping space. Likewise, a an option for longer hikes where weight and space are a consideration but sleep is still absolutely a priority.

We run two DreamHavens for our girls, placed alongside our DreamBoats to create a continuous sleeping area. The arrangement works perfectly — everyone on the same level, side by side, in one shared space. The DreamHaven Single at 15cm depth actually gives the girls a marginally deeper sleep surface than our own 12cm DreamBoats, which tells you everything you need to know about how seriously Outwell takes comfort across their range.

The DreamHaven is available in thicknesses from 5.5cm to 15cm. We use the 15cm version for the girls, which at 200 x 70 x 15cm packs to 74 x 21cm with a weight of 4kg in single form.

One practical advantage of running DreamHavens for the children alongside DreamBoats for adults is that you can configure the sleeping area exactly as you need it - everyone at the same height, in a continuous surface, with no gaps or height differences across the group. Honestly the girls love this setup, I think because it feels cosy and comfy whilst at the same time giving that 'family sleepover' vibe that just doesn't really happen at home when life is busy and we're all doing our own thing. For them it feels like a big slumber party for the whole trip - which as a working parent I can appreciate can sound like a living nightmare - but when you're on holiday it's a different vibe and some of my most cherished memories are from our late night 'relax and chat' sessions in the awning!

Our verdict: Everything that makes the DreamBoat exceptional, in a format that works better for children or smaller sleeping spaces. The combination of DreamBoats for adults and DreamHavens for children is the single biggest upgrade you can make to your family camping sleep setup.

The Airefina Inflatable King-Size Air Mattress — When Height Matters

Who it's for: Anyone who needs or wants a raised sleeping position, campers with mobility considerations, couples who want a king-size surface, or anyone who wants camping to feel more like sleeping in a proper bed.

Airefina camping airbed
Random family NOT included!

There is a meaningful difference between sleeping low and sleeping at height when you are in a tent or awning — not just physically, but psychologically. A raised sleeping surface changes the whole atmosphere of the space. You feel like you are in a bedroom rather than camping. Getting in and out is effortless rather than a manoeuvre. And for anyone with back issues, hip problems, or mobility considerations, the raised position is not optional — it is the difference between comfortable sleep and not.

The Airefina inflatable king-size mattress addresses all of this at a price point that makes it genuinely accessible. At 203 x 152 x 46cm inflated, it is a proper king-size surface that gives two adults ample sleeping space at a 46cm height — roughly the same height as many home divan beds. The built-in electric pump inflates it in around three minutes. The flocked surface is soft and does not feel cold or clammy the way some PVC airbeds do.

The honest caveats are worth being upfront about. Like most air mattresses, the Airefina does require a small amount of pressure management — PVC naturally stretches with use and temperature changes, so you will occasionally top up the air to maintain your preferred firmness. This is a 30-second job and completely normal for this type of product, but it is worth knowing about in advance rather than being surprised by it. The other factor is deflation and packing — at this size, getting it back into the carry bag can require patience, particularly the first few times.

What the Airefina does exceptionally well is deliver a proper raised sleeping experience at a fraction of the price of specialist camping beds at similar height. Its weight capacity of 340kg and anti-slip base make it stable and secure. The raised edge design helps prevent rolling, which matters when you are sharing a sleeping space in a confined area.

If you ever find yourself camping in really bad weather — like named-storm bad — you may be grateful for an option that allows you to sleep raised off the floor. If like us you slacked off the job of re-waterproofing your tent or awning before a trip and found yourself awakened to an accumulating lake of water inside the awning — having that little bit of distance between you and the floor is, I can assure you, a very welcome thing. However, keep your tent waterproofed and you should be fine to choose whatever sleeping arrangement you want. Just saying.

Our verdict: The right choice when height is the priority. Not quite the same level of immediate comfort as the Outwell mats straight out of the bag, but with the Duvalay topper described below it becomes an outstanding combination that addresses both the comfort and height questions simultaneously.

The Duvalay Travel Memory Foam Topper — The Upgrade That Changes Everything

Who it's for: Anyone using an air mattress who wants home-level comfort, or anyone with back or joint concerns who needs proper support overnight.

Duvalay Mattress Topper

The Duvalay travel topper is the product that most consistently gets asked about when we post pictures of our camping sleep setup. It looks simple — a rollable memory foam topper — but the difference it makes to an air mattress is transformative in a way that is difficult to convey without experiencing it.

We have four, one for each member of the family. They were used far more heavily on the Airefina than on the Outwell mats (the DreamBoat and DreamHaven are comfortable enough that the topper adds minimal benefit on top). On an air mattress, however, the Duvalay is the thing that crosses the line from 'camping sleep' to 'sleeping like you are at home.' The memory foam layer addresses the main weakness of any air mattress, the slight bounciness and imprecision of feel that makes it difficult to get completely comfortable, and replaces it with the body-conforming, pressure-distributing support that memory foam is known for. We also use this when sleeping in the van on either our rock 'n' roll bed or the pop-top. We still absolutely do this for short stays or stopovers en route somewhere else where establishing the full setup would be a waste of valuable travel time. This is also where the Duvalay earns its place in the setup. Say what you will, the pop-top mattress can be described as 'thin' at best or 'wafer thin' if you were feeling dramatic. It has to be to allow the roof to close properly for driving. But it's an easy fix, a couple of Duvalay travel toppers up there and we're in business. Likewise, the rock 'n' roll bed is not really a 'bed' at all. It's a car seat laid flat. And that's exactly what it feels like to sleep on. The toppers just make the whole thing feel like a much more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

The Duvalay is available in two key variants: the Compact (2.5cm, slimmer profile, easier to store) and the Comfort (5cm, deeper support, our preference and recommendation for camping use). Both use Duvalay's exclusive memory foam with a temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking stretch fabric cover that is removable and machine washable.

Width options are 58cm, 66cm, or 77cm — we recommend measuring your mattress or mat surface and choosing accordingly. Two 66cm toppers placed side by side cover a standard double sleeping surface and store more easily than a single double-width option.

Practical note: if you are using the Duvalay on the Hi-Gear bunk bed described below, a 66cm topper fits the bunk sleeping surface well and is the combination that keeps children happy on longer trips.

Our verdict: Genuinely worth every penny. On the Airefina it is not optional if you want to sleep well — it is what closes the gap between an air mattress and a proper bed. Add it to your setup and you will not understand how you camped without it.

The Hi-Gear Duo Bunk Bed — The Space-Saving Solution That Works for Adults Too

Who it's for: Families with children who need to maximise space, anyone who wants height without the cost of a full air mattress setup, and anyone who needs an occasional second bed at home for sleepovers or visiting family.

The Hi-Gear Duo Bunk Bed

Camping bunk beds are a category that has improved significantly in the last few years, and the Hi-Gear Duo is the product that currently sits clearly at the top of the realistic options at its price point.

We should be transparent here: we owned the Kampa Bunkie for years before the Hi-Gear existed as an option, and the comparison is instructive. The Kampa Bunkie was genuinely excellent at delivering what it promised — a space-saving bunk solution for children that the girls loved — but the assembly was a consistent source of frustration. Half an hour of pole wrestling, fingers regularly caught in the joints during construction, and an experience that required a fair amount of patience (and the promise of a cold beer at the end) before every camping trip. The product worked brilliantly once up. Getting it there was the part we always slightly dreaded.

The Hi-Gear Duo is a different experience entirely. Its concertina-style folding system means the bunk largely assembles itself, open it up, lock the legs, and you are done. The steel frame and heavy-duty polyester fabric construction is solid enough for adults as well as children, with a maximum load of 110kg per bunk. The assembled size of 180 x 72 x 78cm gives a proper sleeping surface at a genuinely raised height, and the storage pockets on the top bunk rail are a thoughtful practical touch.

The versatility beyond camping is worth mentioning. Our Hi-Gear Duo has been to the grandparents' house for the grandchildren to sleep in over Christmas. It has come out for sleepovers and done duty as a proper bed solution in situations where space was tight and floor-level sleeping was not ideal. At 15.8kg packed into its carry bag (83 x 18 x 31cm), it travels easily and sets up in a fraction of the time of any pole-based camping bed we have used.

One honest note: for adults the bunk width of 72cm is on the narrow side. Adults will sleep fine on it, and the 110kg capacity means it is structurally sound for most adults , but it is a tighter fit than a standard single bed. For children it is perfectly sized. For adults it works as a practical solution rather than a luxurious one.

Our verdict: The best camping bunk bed currently available at its price point by a meaningful margin over older designs. The improvement in ease of setup compared to earlier generations of pole-frame bunks is significant enough to justify upgrading if you own an older design. The versatility beyond camping makes it a purchase that earns its keep year-round.

The Complete Family Camping Sleep Setup: Which Option is Right for You?

Rather than giving a single recommendation, the honest answer is that the right setup depends on your specific situation. Here is how we think about the decision.

Choose the Outwell DreamBoat / DreamHaven combination if: You want the absolute best camping sleep experience, mobility and getting up from the floor is not a concern for anyone in your group, you are camping in an awning or large family tent where floor space is generous, and you want to wake up genuinely well-rested without any fuss or complexity.

Choose the Airefina + Duvalay combination if: Anyone in your group needs or strongly prefers a raised sleeping position, you want camping to feel as close to sleeping at home as possible, you are camping with older adults or anyone with back, hip, or knee considerations, or you want one mattress surface that two adults can comfortably share at bed height.

Choose the Hi-Gear Duo Bunk if: You are camping with children and space is genuinely limited, you want a solution that works at camping and at home, your children are at the age where the bunk bed is a genuine excitement rather than a compromise, or you want a raised sleeping position for the children without the cost and weight of an air mattress per person.

Our actual setup: DreamBoats for the adults, DreamHavens for the children, all four side by side in the single-compartment Vango Galli awning. This is the setup we would choose again without hesitation. The quality of sleep it delivers has changed the whole character of our camping trips in a way that nothing else in our kit, not the awning, not the cooking gear, not the seating, has come close to matching.

Inflation: The Pump That Makes All of This Work

Outdoor Master Shark 2S pump on the grass

A quick note on inflation because it is worth mentioning in the context of these products. We inflate everything with the Outdoor Master Shark 2S pump. It handles the Outwell mats, the Airefina, and the paddleboards in one versatile package. We will cover it in a dedicated review, and link to our kayak and paddleboard content when we review those, but for now: if you are buying any of these sleep products, the Shark 2S is the pump that removes every last trace of effort from the inflation process. Inflation that used to take twenty minutes of manual pumping now takes three. It is not optional once you have used it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most comfortable camping sleeping mat?

Based on our testing, the Outwell DreamBoat is the most comfortable camping sleeping mat we have used. Its horizontal foam channels create a spongy, body-contouring feel that is genuinely comparable to memory foam. The 12cm depth and advanced foam construction put it in a category above standard self-inflating mats.

Are self-inflating mats or air mattresses better for camping?

Both are valid options serving different needs. Self-inflating mats like the Outwell DreamBoat offer exceptional comfort and insulation from the ground but keep you at a lower sleeping height. Air mattresses like the Airefina offer a raised sleeping position that many people prefer but require more attention to firmness management. The right answer depends on whether height or comfort at ground level is the priority.

Is the Outwell DreamBoat worth the money?

Yes, in our experience. The DreamBoat is a premium product at a premium price. But the quality of sleep it delivers is genuinely different to what cheaper mats provide, and across the number of nights we have used ours it has proven durable, reliable, and consistently comfortable. If you camp regularly and poor sleep has been an issue, the investment is justified.

Can you use a memory foam topper on a camping air mattress?

Yes, and the Duvalay travel topper is specifically designed for this purpose. It is a rollable, portable memory foam topper that adds genuine comfort depth to any air mattress surface. The difference it makes to the Airefina king-size mattress is transformative. It effectively eliminates the main comfort weakness of air mattresses.

Are camping bunk beds suitable for adults?

The Hi-Gear Duo Bunk is rated to 110kg per bunk and is suitable for adults. The sleeping width of 72cm is narrower than a standard single bed, which is worth considering for larger adults, but structurally it is sound for adult use. For children it is very well suited.

How do you inflate an Outwell DreamBoat?

The Outwell DreamBoat is self-inflating: open the AFC valve and the foam core draws air in automatically. For a fuller, firmer result, a few additional puffs through the valve finishes the job. We use the Outdoor Master Shark 2S pump for a faster and more consistent result. The same valve handles deflation: open it fully and roll the mat from one end to compress the air out.

What is the difference between the Outwell DreamBoat and DreamHaven?

The DreamBoat is the wider model designed primarily for adults, available in single (80cm) and double (140cm) versions. The DreamHaven is narrower at 70cm wide in single form, making it a better fit for children or tighter sleeping spaces. Interestingly, the 15cm DreamHaven we use is actually deeper than our 12cm DreamBoats, so the children get a marginally thicker sleep surface. Both use the same foam construction and valve system.

Does a camping air mattress go flat overnight?

PVC air mattresses naturally experience minor pressure changes overnight as the material stretches and temperature drops. This is normal and not a sign of a puncture. With the Airefina, we occasionally top up the air with the built-in pump in the morning. The Outwell self-inflating mats do not have this issue as the foam core maintains the structure.

What thickness camping mat do I need?

For occasional campers, 5 to 7.5cm is adequate for summer use. For regular family camping we recommend 10 to 12cm as a minimum for genuine comfort. For maximum comfort, the 15cm range delivers the closest thing to sleeping on a proper mattress. Below 5cm is fine for ultralight backpacking but not for family camping where quality sleep matters.

Can you use the Outwell DreamBoat in all seasons?

Yes. The Outwell DreamBoat has an R-Value of 2.8 at minus 3C and 4.7 at minus 16C in its double version, making it genuinely suitable for three-season camping. We have used ours in cool autumn conditions and early spring in the UK without any issues. For winter camping below freezing you would want to add insulation beneath.

What is the best camping bed for bad backs?

If you need a firm, body-contouring surface, the Outwell DreamBoat's advanced foam construction is excellent. If you need a raised position to make getting in and out easier, the Airefina king-size air mattress at 46cm height paired with a Duvalay memory foam topper is our recommendation. The Duvalay is specifically designed to relieve pressure points and is frequently recommended for people with back, hip, and joint pain.

How do you store a Duvalay travel topper?

The Duvalay travel topper rolls up and secures with buckled straps. The Comfort version (5cm) rolls to a compact size suitable for a large camping box or van storage locker. The cover is removable and machine washable at 30C.

Is the Hi-Gear Duo Bunk better than the Kampa Bunkie?

In our honest experience, yes, significantly. The Kampa Bunkie required pole assembly that regularly took 30 to 40 minutes and was genuinely frustrating. The Hi-Gear Duo's concertina folding system is a fundamentally different and better design: it goes up in minutes with no tools required. Both do the same job once assembled, but the Hi-Gear gets there far more pleasantly. At a similar price point, the Hi-Gear is the one we would buy today.
