Best Hiking Boots for Fashion-Conscious Women: 12 Picks That Deliver on Both

Years of trail testing, blisters and boot-induced misery led us here. This is the honest list — boots that do the job and look genuinely good doing it.

By Carina  ·  Nest Nomad & Beyond

Over the years I have owned countless pairs of hiking boots, thanks in no small part to the fact that finding ones that do not rub blisters on my feet has been, and continues to be, an ongoing challenge. I'm not entirely sure why this is. For years I had just assumed I was buying poorly made products and that, as frustrating as it was, I would need to keep searching until I got it right.

However, now that my eldest is 14, she has the same size feet as me and has inherited a few of my rejects — all of which seem to work perfectly for her. In fact she just completed a 10-mile hike as part of her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award in a pair of my old Merrell hiking boots. Sure enough, whilst her friends were all reaching for the blister plasters, she was totally fine. Perhaps my initial pain endurance broke them in. Perhaps our feet are just a slightly different shape. Who knows — but the point is, I have been through many pairs of hiking footwear over the years, which means I feel fairly well equipped to comment here.

There have been at least three Snowdon hikes, treks in Scotland, the Lake District, Cornwall, Devon and South Wales, and further afield in British Columbia, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Bali, Spain, France, Switzerland and Italy. We love a good hike. And after all these years of trial and error, I have learned the hard way that getting it wrong means a miserable time when you are two miles into a six-mile hike and your heels are screaming at you.

Finding the perfect hiking footwear has been a persistent itch of mine. I want something that offers comfort, support, grip and waterproofing — while also looking like something I would be happy to pop into the pub en-route in. That should not be that hard, right? Well, as it turns out, it can be. I know it's not a fashion show. My mother's voice is very much in my head on this. But I still want to feel good in my kit, and that 100% extends to my footwear.

So, here is the NNB list of top picks for the best hiking boots for fashion-conscious women. Comfort, waterproofing, support and grip — and yes, whether they actually look good. Different price points, different budgets. But what I will say: once you nail it with a pair, you will keep them for years. A bit of upfront investment in the right kit is almost always worth it. Plus, think of all the money you will save on blister plasters.

In this guide:  →  Under £100  →  £100–£200  →  £200+  →  NNB Round-Up  →  FAQ

UNDER £100 — TWO SOLID STARTERS

Good hiking footwear does not have to cost a fortune. These two deliver genuine waterproofing, reliable grip and enough style to earn their place on the list.

1. North Ridge Women's Flux Speed Waterproof Walking Shoe  —  £65–£90

★  NNB TOP PICK IN THIS TIER

The sporty trail-to-town option that punches well above its price.

North Ridge Flux Speed waterproof walking shoe in grey and teal, lightweight trail-to-town women's hiking shoe under GBP100

The North Ridge Flux Speed is the accessible entry point on this list — and a genuinely strong one. Built around a 50% recycled ripstop mesh upper with a seam-sealed waterproof membrane and DWR coating, a cushioned EVA midsole for shock absorption, and a durable rubber outsole with high-traction grip across mixed surfaces. It is lightweight, breathable and designed explicitly for the trail-to-town crossover. The chunky silhouette with its neoprene ankle collar gives it a distinctly sporty, modern look — the kind of hiking shoe that works equally well for a dog walk as it does for a day on the hills. Sizing note: reviewers consistently recommend going true to size, though some find the fit slightly narrow — worth sizing half up if you are between sizes.

Verdict: A great-looking, well-priced entry point. Sporty and modern without trying too hard. The most accessible option on this list and a strong choice for lighter trails and everyday outdoor use.

2. Columbia Women's Newton Ridge Plus Waterproof Hiking Boot  —  £65–£95

Columbia Newton Ridge Plus waterproof hiking boot in pink and grey leather, classic mid-rise women's hiking boot

The Newton Ridge Plus has been a Columbia staple for years and it keeps selling because it works. Full-grain leather upper, Omni-Tech waterproof membrane, Omni-Grip rubber outsole, and TechLite midsole cushioning. Comfortable straight out of the box with minimal break-in time. Honest caveat: this is a boot for moderate day hikes on established trails rather than technical ground. The leather upper gives it a cleaner, more classic look than many boots at this price — especially the pink and grey colourway, which reads as a deliberate style choice rather than a default hiking boot.

Verdict: Outstanding value. The leather silhouette reads as a proper boot rather than a budget compromise. A strong starting point for occasional hikers who want something presentable.

3. Merrell Women's Moab 3 Waterproof Hiking Shoe  —  £90–£115

★  NNB TOP PICK IN THIS TIER

The world's bestselling hiker — now with full Gore-Tex waterproofing.

Merrell Moab 3 GTX waterproof hiking shoe in fuchsia pink, world bestselling Gore-Tex hiking shoe for women

The Merrell Moab 3 is the bestselling hiking shoe in the world, and the Waterproof version adds full Gore-Tex performance to its already proven formula. Pigskin leather and breathable mesh upper, Vibram TC5+ outsole for exceptional all-terrain grip, Merrell Air Cushion in the heel for impact absorption, and a Super Rebound Compound midsole for a smooth, supportive stride. Comfortable straight out of the box, a claim you cannot make about every boot at this price. Personal note: this is the exact shoe my daughter completed her Duke of Edinburgh hike in, blister-free, in a pair I had previously retired with my own blisters. Fit is everything, and the Moab 3 is accommodating for most foot shapes. Wide widths available. The pink/fuchsia and grey/teal colourways are both genuinely good-looking.

Verdict: The proven all-rounder with a step up in waterproofing performance. Dependable, comfortable from day one, wide fit available. One of the best value options on this list.

4. Columbia Women's Newton Ridge BC Mid Rise Trekking Boot  — £100–£130

The upgraded Newton Ridge — better construction, better style, and frankly the ones on the NNB wish list.

Columbia Newton Ridge BC Mid Rise hiking boot in black and teal nubuck, style upgrade on the classic Newton Ridge

Full transparency: these are the boots currently sitting at the top of my personal wish list. The Newton Ridge BC is Columbia's more refined take on their flagship hiking boot silhouette, and the black and teal colourway has my name written all over it — there is a slightly 80s trainer-boot style influence here that I am completely here for. Nubuck upper, updated hardware, Omni-Tech waterproof membrane and an improved Omni-Grip outsole with better traction than the standard Newton Ridge. For buyers who liked the classic Newton Ridge and want a step up in both look and performance, this is it.

Verdict: The style upgrade on a trusted formula. Contemporary colourways, improved construction, Columbia reliability. The black and teal is a genuinely distinctive choice.

5. HOKA Women's Anacapa 2 Mid GTX  —  £150–£175

Cloud cushioning meets Gore-Tex in a boot that moves like a trainer.

HOKA Anacapa 2 Mid GTX women's hiking boot with Vibram Megagrip, the fashion-forward Gore-Tex hiker

HOKA's signature max-cushioned midsole in a proper hiking boot format — and it works. Minimal break-in, Gore-Tex Invisible Fit lining integrated into the nubuck leather upper, Vibram Megagrip outsole for outstanding traction on wet rock. The rocker heel profile is unmistakably HOKA and gives it a streetwear edge that most hiking boots completely lack. Multiple reviewers describe it as the boot that passes the fashionable-friend approval test. Runs narrow through the toe box — try half a size up if wide-footed.

Verdict: The fashion hiker. If you want one boot that performs on a full-day hike and genuinely passes as a stylish choice afterwards, the Anacapa 2 Mid GTX is the strongest contender in this guide.

6. Lowa Women's Renegade Evo GTX Mid  —  £160–£195

Twenty-five years as the benchmark. Still the one to beat — and available in wide fit.

Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid women's hiking boot in nubuck leather, available in dedicated wide fit, 25 year European bestseller

The Lowa Renegade has been Europe's bestselling hiking boot for 25 years, and the Evo update makes it better. Fewer seams in the upper, revised midsole, PFAS-free Gore-Tex membrane, and the Vibram Vialta Pro sole. Outstanding cushioning over long days. Critically: available in both standard and wide widths from a genuinely wider last — not a stretched standard — which makes it a standout recommendation for women who have historically struggled with hiking boot fit. Timeless rather than trend-led, but the nubuck leather ages beautifully.

Verdict: The serious hiker's choice. Especially recommended if you have wide feet or have burned through multiple pairs looking for something that actually fits properly.

Spend once, spend right. These three represent the best of what premium hiking footwear offers — in materials, construction, longevity and design confidence.

7. Salewa Women's Rapace Gore-Tex Mountaineering Boot  —  £235

Technical pedigree, striking colourways, and a boot that means business.

Salewa Rapace Gore-Tex women's mountaineering boot in green and black, technical hiking with Vibram Pomoca outsole

The Rapace is where this list tips from hiking boot into proper mountaineering territory. Three-layer laminate upper, Gore-Tex, Vibram outsole engineered for scrambling and light cramponing, semi-rigid midsole for underfoot protection on rocky ground, and welt construction that allows resoling — a significant long-term value consideration. For those heading into serious mountain terrain who want a boot that handles technical ground confidently. The green/black and purple/black colourways are genuinely striking — one of the most visually distinctive options on this list.

Verdict: The technical choice. For women who push into serious terrain and want a boot that reflects that ambition — and still looks like a deliberate choice.

8. Salomon Women's X Ultra 4 Mid GTX  —  £250

Lightweight, supportive and built with a women's-specific fit in mind.

Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX women's hiking boot in alfalfa green, Gore-Tex waterproof with Contagrip outsole

The X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is a well-proven women's-specific mid-top with an extensive body of real-world reviews behind it. The women's version features a softer collar and cuff, lower-density ADV-C Chassis designed around the female foot's outer edge, Gore-Tex waterproofing, and Salomon's Contagrip MA outsole for reliable traction across wet, dry, hard and loose surfaces. A great three-season boot for mixed terrain from forest tracks to mountain paths. The green colourway — Alfalfa/Deep Lichen Green — is a standout choice: earthy, on-trend and genuinely distinctive on the trail.

Verdict: A well-proven, women's-specific mid-top with Gore-Tex reliability and a colourway that turns heads. Strong value at this price point.

9. Mishmi Takin Women's Kameng Mid eVent Waterproof Hiking Boot  — £500 - £550

Mishmi Takin Kameng Mid eVent waterproof hiking boot, Italian-made with Vibram Megagrip and 1000 mile guarantee

Mishmi Takin is a small brand that makes one thing exceptionally well, and the Kameng is the proof. Built in Europe with Italian leather uppers, real Cordura fabric, and a US-made eVent waterproof membrane — the key distinction here being that eVent is genuinely more breathable than standard Gore-Tex, dumping moisture directly through microscopic pores rather than relying on body heat to activate the membrane. The result is a waterproof boot that Backpacker magazine named 'Most Breathable Waterproof Boot' and Men's Health named 'Best Backpacking Boot'. The Vibram Megagrip outsole delivers outstanding grip on wet rock, mud and ice, and the innovative stretch heel section relieves pressure on the Achilles tendon on descents. The 1,000-mile guarantee is not marketing copy — it reflects genuine construction confidence. Comfortable straight out of the box. Available in several colourways including a distinctive sunset orange that is quite something on the trail.

Verdict: The insider's premium pick. If you run hot in waterproof boots, or if you push long miles in mixed conditions and want footwear that is built to last, the Kameng is the one most people on this list haven't heard of — but should have.

10. Lowa Women's Renegade Evo Ice GTX High Rise  - £265

Lowa Renegade Evo Ice GTX High Rise women's hiking boot in brown marrone, Sympatex insulated winter hiker

The Renegade Evo in its most serious configuration. Extended ankle cuff, Sympatex insulation for cold-weather comfort, PFAS-free Gore-Tex, and the same Vibram outsole that makes the standard Renegade Evo a perennial bestseller. For days when the weather turns without warning and you need a boot that will not let you down. The brown/marrone colourway is warm-toned and genuinely beautiful — one of the few high-ankle hiking boots that looks expensive rather than purely utilitarian.

Verdict:The serious winter investment. Technically unimpeachable, and the brown/marrone colourway is absolutely having a fashion moment right now.

11. Zamberlan Women's 1996 Vioz Lux Gore-Tex RR  —  £230–£280

Italian craftsmanship, a resole-worthy sole unit, and a boot that improves with age.

Zamberlan 1996 Vioz Lux GTX RR women's hiking boot in suede leather, Italian-crafted resoleable hiker with Vibram Stura outsole

Zamberlan has been making boots in Italy since 1929 and the Vioz Lux is their flagship women's hiker. Full-grain Perwanger suede leather, Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane, Vibram Stura EVO outsole, and Zamberlan's RR (Reciprocal Rocker) midsole technology for natural impact absorption over long distances. The construction quality is in a different category from anything else on this list — closer to handcrafted than manufactured. The sole can be professionally resoled. The suede develops character with use. It does require proper break-in — plan three or four shorter outings first.

Verdict: The connoisseur's choice. Buy it once, keep it for a decade. The kind of boot that tells a story about who is wearing it.

ALSO WORTH KNOWING ABOUT

One more option that caught our eye — with an honest caveat worth reading before you buy.

12. Berghaus Women's Revolute Active Hiking Trail Shoe  —  £83–£130

Stylish, eco-conscious and comfortable — but read the waterproofing note before you buy.

Berghaus Revolute Active women's hiking trail shoe, eco-friendly Vibram ECO-STEP outsole with bio-based AQ lining

The Berghaus Revolute Active is a genuinely attractive shoe — built on a trail shoe foundation with a bio-based waterproof AQ lining, Vibram ECO-STEP outsole with OPTI-STUD grip, and a largely recycled synthetic construction that makes it one of the more environmentally considered options on this list. Lightweight, comfortable from the first wear and praised for its modern styling. Berghaus also offers unlimited free repairs on their walking shoes, which is a meaningful added value.  Honest flag: reviewer feedback is mixed on real-world waterproofing performance — some report feet staying completely dry, others found the AQ lining insufficient in sustained wet conditions. For lighter trail use, dog walks and drier-weather hiking it is a strong, stylish, well-priced choice. For anything involving prolonged wet ground, the Gore-Tex options elsewhere on this list are the safer bet. Runs slightly narrow — size half up recommended.

Verdict: A stylish, sustainable option that is comfortable from day one. Best suited to lighter trails and drier conditions. Check current reviews on waterproofing performance before buying.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do any of these hiking boots come in wide fit?

Yes. The Lowa Renegade Evo GTX Mid is available in a dedicated wide-fit version built from a genuinely wider last. Merrell also offers wide widths in the Moab 3 Waterproof. Mishmi Takin offers a wide model of the Kameng. For severe wide-foot needs, the Lowa is the clearest recommendation on this list.

Are expensive hiking boots worth it?

Often yes — but match the boot to what you actually do. A Zamberlan at £250 makes sense if you hike regularly on challenging terrain and want a boot that lasts a decade. A Merrell Moab 3 Waterproof at £100 makes sense for occasional moderate day hikes. The mistake is spending premium money on a technical boot you only ever take on an easy forest path — or equally, buying something cheap and under-engineered for serious ground.

Can fashion hiking boots be worn casually?

Several on this list cross over well. The HOKA Anacapa 2 Mid GTX, Salomon X Ultra 4 Mid GTX, Columbia Newton Ridge BC Mid Rise and North Ridge Flux Speed all transition comfortably from trail to casual wear. The more technical options like the Salewa Rapace and Mishmi Takin Kameng are better suited to the mountain.

How do I avoid blisters in new hiking boots?

Wear them in properly first. Do three or four short walks before any long hike, wearing your actual hiking socks. Use a quality wool or synthetic sock — never cotton, which holds moisture and creates friction. Carry proper blister plasters (Compeed is the gold standard) and apply at the very first hint of rubbing, not after the blister has formed. And if a boot causes significant discomfort in the first ten minutes, no amount of breaking in will fix a fundamental fit problem.

What is the difference between Gore-Tex and eVent waterproofing?

Both are waterproof membranes but they work differently. Gore-Tex requires heat from your foot to activate the breathability — meaning it works well once you are moving but can feel stuffy at first. eVent, used in the Mishmi Takin Kameng, allows moisture to pass directly through microscopic pores without needing heat activation, making it more breathable from the moment you put it on. For most hiking scenarios both perform very well. For long days in warm or humid conditions where sweaty feet are the bigger concern, eVent has a meaningful edge.
