Camping Bergamini Review: The Quiet Lake Garda Campsite We Keep Going Back To

Two summers running. The same small site on the water. A pool, a view, and a calm we could not find anywhere else on the lake in August.

We paid our own way. Nobody gifted us this stay and nobody is paying for this review. We have booked and paid for Camping Bergamini twice, as a normal family on holiday. These are our full, unfiltered thoughts, the good, the bad and the honest.
Lake Garda in August is beautiful and completely rammed. Boatloads of day trippers, full car parks, and campsites that feel more like festivals than holidays. Camping Bergamini is the one exception we have found, and after two summers running it is the site we would tell you to book.
We did not exactly plan it that way. Both years came together at the last minute, thanks to work and the joys of being "your own boss". After a full-on start to the year, the last thing we wanted was the faff of researching somewhere new, and quite frankly we did not fancy gambling on a huge, noisy, over-saturated site in the middle of the summer holidays. So we loaded up our VW campervan Blue with the EcoFlow Wave 3 air conditioner, the Vango Galli CC Low awning, and our new EcoFlow Glacier battery powered fridge freezer (fancy, I know!), and off we went.
We broke the journey with a five night stop at Campofelice, on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore, a stunning site but a much bigger one, 710 pitches to Bergamini's more intimate handful, but still surprisingly quiet and stunning.

Our full write up of that stop is coming soon. From there it was a four hour drive south to Lake Garda, where we were lucky to grab the very last pitch at Bergamini. That is the first honest tip worth passing on: if you want this place in August, book well ahead.
Both times we stayed a week in the last stretch of August. Here is the honest account of why we keep coming back, what the site does brilliantly, and the one or two things worth knowing before you book.

First impressions, a quiet oasis in a busy August

You feel the difference as soon as you arrive. Both years we grabbed the last pitch going, which is the first honest tip worth passing on: if you want Bergamini in August, book well ahead, because plenty of people have already worked out what we did.
What kept us coming back was not just the pool and the view, although those were what drew us the first time. It was the feel of the place - or as our two daughters, one Gen Z and other Gen Alpha call it the "vibes". As middle class millennials we prefer the "Ambiance".
A quiet site with no entertainment

The thing that turns Bergamini from a nice campsite into our kind of campsite is what it does not have. There is no animation programme, no poolside microphone, no music thumping out of an entertainment tent late into the evening. If that sounds like a criticism, it is the opposite. This is a site for families and couples who want to relax properly, read a book by the pool, let the children swim, have a leisurely Aperol Spritz by the pool and eat dinner without a compere involved.
The site is small and well kept, and the people it attracts match that. The crowd is mostly German and Dutch, with a scattering of Brits, Austrians and French, the different languages around the pool become part of the calm rather than a distraction. Nobody is blaring music from their awning at 1am in the morning. If you want the busier, all-singing kind of holiday, Bella Italia is just down the road and does that very well. Bergamini is the small quiet alternative, and that is exactly why we booked it twice.
The infinity pool and the view

The pool and the view are what drew us back before we had even unpacked the first time. The heated infinity pool sits right above the lake, so you swim looking straight out at the water and across to Mount Baldo. There are hydromassage corners if you want them, and a hoist for anyone who needs easier access to the water.
Even on a busy August weekend we never once struggled to find a sun lounger and a bit of shade, which tells you how sensibly the site is run. Drinks come to the poolside, so a freshly made Mojito or a virgin cocktail for the girls is never far away. It is a lovely place to lose an afternoon, and the view does not get old.
Bringing the dogs
We travel with two dogs, and although they stayed home for this trip, as dog owners we always notice how a site treats them. Bergamini is set up for dogs properly rather than just tolerating them. Dogs are welcome on the pitches and in the rental accommodation, in high season and low. There is a shaded dog relax area near the pool, a dedicated dog shower over at the facilities block, and bag dispensers dotted around the site. There is even a stretch of dog beach where dogs are allowed to swim, a 150 metres from the site, which is rare on the lake.
Most of the pitches have good shade through the day, which matters a great deal when the temperature is sitting in the low thirties and you have a dog with you. If you are planning to bring yours, this is one of the more dog friendly sites we have come across on Lake Garda.
A real eco-camping

Plenty of sites call themselves green. Bergamini has the certificate to back it up. It is a GSTC certified eco-camping, part of the Garda Green circuit, and it runs on solar and photovoltaic power with buildings made from sustainable timber. Water is used carefully, waste is properly separated, and the whole place leans plastic free.
You feel it in the small details more than the signage. Ice cold filtered water is free to everyone and included in the site fees, which in the heat of August is worth more than it sounds. The site is spotless, and that comes as much from a customer base that respects the place as from the staff who keep it that way.
Pitches, facilities and the snack bar

The pitches all have electric and their own water, and the site is compact enough that the facilities are never a long walk. We had a Comfort XL pitch, which was extremely generous, but a standard Comfort pitch would take our campervan comfortably, so do not feel you need to size up. Prices sit at the mid to upper end for the lake, and the lake view pitches carry a premium, so check the site for current rates before you book.
On the facilities, the big question on any campsite is the toilets and showers, and here they are spacious, spotless, and we never once had to wait for a cubicle. There is even a coin operated dishwasher for a couple of euros, which felt a bit like cheating so we never used it, though we might give in one day.

The Pepe and Zucchero snack bar is very good. The daytime menu runs from breakfast pancakes and fresh smoothies through to lasagne and cheeseburgers, portions are generous, and it caters for different dietary needs without fuss. The food is freshly made with local ingredients and fairly priced, the terrace has the same lake view as the pool, and the girls worked their way steadily through the virgin cocktails and the gelato sundaes. Bikes and e-bikes are available to hire on site too if you want to explore further along the shore. There is a small shop for bread and pastries in the morning (get in there quick!), and a larger supermarket is a short walk away for a proper stock up.
What we packedWe travel in a long wheel base VW campervan, and a few bits earned their place in the heat. Our EcoFlow Wave 3 air conditioner made sleeping in the low thirties bearable, our Vango Galli CC Low awning gave us the extra shaded living space, and our EcoFlow Glacier battery powered fridge freezer kept everything cold without touching the leisure battery. We are giving the Glacier its own full review shortly. |
Where it is, Peschiera and day trips

The location is a quiet win in itself. The site sits right on the lake, and it is a gentle lakeside walk of around twenty five to thirty minutes into the centre of Peschiera del Garda, a walled town that is a UNESCO World Heritage site and well worth an evening. Sirmione is an easy trip, and Verona and Venice are both close enough for a comfortable day out, which is exactly what we did on our first stay.
We arrived at Bergamini after a four hour drive down from Lake Maggiore, where we spent a few earlier nights at a larger site on the Swiss side. If you are routing through that way, our write up of that stop is coming soon.
Who it suits, and who it does not
Bergamini suits families with younger children, couples after a calm few days, and dog owners who want their dog properly catered for. It suits anyone who reads the phrase no animation programme and feels relieved rather than worried.
It will not suit you if you want a big resort with water slides, a kids club and nightly shows. That is a different kind of holiday, and there are sites on the lake built for it. Bergamini is a quiet oasis in a part of Lake Garda that gets very loud in summer, and that is the whole point of it.
Our final verdict
After two summers, our verdict is simple. If you want to relax on Lake Garda rather than survive it, we do not think you can beat Camping Bergamini. It is calm, spotless, properly eco, properly dog friendly, and it has the best pool and view we have found on the lake. We will be back.
Final Verdict | |
THE SITE | Small, calm, spotless and family run since 1954. A real oasis in a part of the lake that gets very loud in summer |
THE POOL | Heated infinity pool right above the water with a Mount Baldo view. Loungers and shade were never a fight, even on an August weekend |
DOGS | Properly set up for them, with a dog beach, relax area, shower and bag dispensers. One of the more dog friendly sites on the lake |
ECO | GSTC certified, solar powered and plastic free, and you feel it in the details, right down to free filtered water. |
FACILITIES | Spotless toilets and showers with no queues, a good snack bar with a lake view, bikes to hire and a shop on site |
LOCATION | On the lake, a short walk into Peschiera, with Sirmione, Verona and Venice all in easy reach |
ONE NOTE | It is quiet by design and it books up early for August. Neither is a flaw, but both are worth knowing before you book |

Frequently asked questions
Is Camping Bergamini worth it?
For the right kind of holiday, yes. If you want a quiet, spotless, family run site right on the lake with an outstanding pool and view, we think it is the best on Lake Garda and we have booked it twice. If you want a big resort with entertainment and water slides, it is not the site for you.
Is Camping Bergamini a quiet campsite?
Very. There is no entertainment or animation programme, no poolside microphone and no late night music. It is a small, calm site that suits people who want to relax rather than be kept busy.
Is there evening entertainment at Camping Bergamini?
No, and that is the point of it. There is no organised evening entertainment or animation, which is exactly why it stays so calm. If you want nightly shows and a kids club, a larger resort site nearby will suit you better.
Can you take dogs to campsites on Lake Garda?

When is Camping Bergamini open?
The site runs from late March to late October, covering the full spring, summer and autumn season on the lake.
How far is Camping Bergamini from Peschiera del Garda?
It is a gentle lakeside walk of around twenty five to thirty minutes into the centre of Peschiera del Garda, which is a walled UNESCO World Heritage town well worth an evening.

Yes. It is a walled UNESCO World Heritage town at the southern end of the lake, a short lakeside walk from the site, and an easy base for Sirmione, Verona and Venice.
What is the best campsite on Lake Garda?
It depends on the holiday you want. For a big resort with entertainment and water slides there are sites built for that. For a quiet, clean, eco and dog friendly site with an outstanding pool and view, Camping Bergamini is our pick.
